Artist's statement

The nude represents the essence, without garment and make-up: just how you are. Exactly this he wants to tell you with his artworks: bringing you in motion to be your pure and beautiful self, your naked truth!

About the artworks

Edwin masters both painting and photography as you can see back in the way he composes his artworks. He reveals the expression of the skin and he accents the female curves as a pleasant melody. His use of high-contrast, dramatic but beautiful light places his models in the spotlights. According to Edwin, this is the place that women deserve. By her attitude, her tender silky skin and her shapes, every woman has the intrinsic ability to pull her strings in her game of seducion and powerplay. It is his intention that his muses inspire you. Women can be fatally attractive, sexy but classy, dominant but allowing a dance with an appropiate partner, playful but elegant, mysterious but always in control.


Edwin (1969) was born, lives and works in Geleen near Maastricht in The Netherlands. As a little boy, he already showed promising talent in painting. His enthusiastic art teacher already advised him to go to art academy with the aim of becoming a successful artist. However, his parents convinced him to choose a more "realistic" career and he decided to study chemistry. Something that turned out to be very useful later on.

After earning his BSc degree in Organic Chemistry, he enjoyed an industrial career as a scientist and inventor at a multinational corporation. This ended in a globally applied invention, improving both environmental emissions and costs. The circumstances after this innovation taught him that he had sacrificed too much of himself. He forgot to stay close to his heart and drifted away from being happy. However, he learned from this experience that the most beautiful and sustainable solutions are closer than you expect. As a result, his mission as an artist was born.

Edwin started painting in 2008 and found his mind to settle down. As a result, he experienced creative moments without thoughts. He discovered the treasure of who he really is: his naked truth. He feels stronger and wants to share this beautiful experience through the language of art. A language that communicates at a deeper level than the ratio.

Edwin is fascinated by the powerful influence of light on the subject. That is why he likes to experiment with this in his artworks. It will not surprise you that his first paintings were inspired by the light in Provence, as experienced by Van Gogh, Puget, Picasso and so many other artists. Later, when Edwin attended master classes, his teacher noted his talent and advised him to focus on portrait and model. She convinced him to study the nude, because an artist needs to know the anatomy of the body. This great advice that he never regretted brought him very close to his essence.

Over time, Edwin discovered that photography is a powerful technique for studying composition, light and color in a work of art. He took private lessons and master classes to fine-tune his technique and skills. Beautiful photos are the result. For Edwin, photography is a complementary technique for painting, since the human eye observes significantly differently than the photo film or the camera sensor. This is due to the fact that a camera has only one lens whereas people have two eyes. That is why he works as much as possible in painting, as eyes see more than a photo can reveal.

The nudes in his paintings and photographs represent beauty, creativity and warmth. The nude symbolizes pure essence for Edwin. To quote Michelangelo, "What spirit is so empty and blind that it cannot recognize that the foot is more noble than the shoe, and the skin more beautiful than the garment it is clothed with?"

Edwin prefers to work with egg tempera and oil paint, in accordance with the techniques of the old masters, as developed from the Renaissance. For him, this is a practical and aesthetic choice, as it has been proven that these techniques have survived for centuries and most realistically depict the texture and color of the skin. For this reason he makes his own egg tempera and oil paint with original and often toxic pigments.

His works were shown at exhibitions in Sittard, Geleen, Maastricht, Miami, Barcelona, ​​London, Venice, Knokke and Amsterdam. His works are part of collections in Amsterdam, Maastricht, London, Aix-en-Provence, Oxford, Genk and Sittard-Geleen.
