Practice
Edwin IJpeij works across painting and photography, with the painting as the central axis of his practise. Both are rooted in process, material precision and sustained attention of image making.
Painting forms the core of Edwin IJpeij's practice. Working in oil and egg tempera, he builds each work through a layered process informed by early Netherlandish technique. Belgian linen mounted on panel. multiple layers of gesso, and a slow construction of the imageall contribute to a surface defined by stillness, precision and presence.
Rooted in old master discipline yet contemporary in its visual language, the paintings are centred on the female figure and shaped through sustained attention to material and form.
Alongside painting, IJpeij maintains a photographic practice that extends his interest in light, process, and image construction. Working with alternative techniques, such as cyanotype and palladiotype, he approaches photography as a related field of study within the studio.
These works form a secondary but integral strand within the broader practice.
