Invention and Material Practice
Before devoting himself fully to painting, Edwin IJpeij worked as an inventor in molecular chemistry. His research led to more than thirty patents in areas including catalysis, bulk chemistry, pharmaceutical intermediates and vitamin production.
That background did not disappear when he entered the studio. It changed context.
The habits formed through scientific research - observation, precision, patience and an understanding of material behaviour - continue to inform how each painting is built. For IJpeij, a painting is not only an image. It is a constructed object in which support, ground, pigment, binder, surface and frame all matter.
In the studio, this way of thinking appears in his sustained attention to grounds, binders, pigments and the compatibility of materials across layers. Questions of stability, adhesion, drying, optical depth and long-term behaviour are not secondary. They are part of the integrity of the finished work.
His interest in historical materials is therefore not nostalgic. It is investigative. Certain optical qualities associated with older painting materials can be studied, translated and approached through contemporary, safer combinations. The aim is not to reproduce the past, but to understand how material decisions shape light, surface and presence.
What began in science as an attention to reaction, structure and endurance now informs the construction of painted surfaces: from panel, canvas and gesso to underpainting, oil layers and the final behaviour of light within the paint film.
Invention remains present in the practice, not as a theme, but as a method of attention.
